Summary

Regular exercise may improve memory in adults with Down syndrome (DS). A 12-week study showed positive changes in memory function after participants engaged in physical activity (PA) sessions.

  • Adults with DS have a high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease pathology.
  • Physical activity (PA) may preserve cognitive function, including memory.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess cognitive function changes in adults with DS after a 12-week exercise intervention.
  • To evaluate the impact of structured PA on memory, attention, and reaction time.

Main Methods:

  • 12-week randomized controlled trial with 27 adults with DS.
  • Participants engaged in 30-minute group exercise sessions 1 or 2 times weekly via video conferencing.
  • Cognitive function assessed using the Cantab Dementia Battery for iPads at baseline and study end.

Main Results:

  • Participants improved performance on two memory variables (p=0.048 and p=0.069).
  • Those attending 2 sessions/week averaged 57.7 min/week of PA.
  • Those attending 1 session/week averaged 26.6 min/week of PA.

Conclusions:

  • Increased exercise shows potential for positive cognitive changes in adults with DS.
  • PA may be a viable strategy to support memory function in this population.
