Medical students find anatomy study challenging, with many feeling their knowledge is inadequate. Integrating 3D tools could significantly enhance anatomy education and improve student learning outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Anatomy

Background:

  • Sufficient anatomy knowledge is crucial for medical professionals.
  • Factors influencing anatomy learning include resources, time, and support.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore medical students' attitudes towards anatomy study.
  • To identify areas for improvement in anatomy training.

Main Methods:

  • A focus group of 20 medical students was conducted.
  • An online survey was developed and distributed to 495 medical students at Maastricht University.
  • Data were analyzed to compare attitudes and perceived knowledge between Bachelor and Master students.

Main Results:

  • Master students reported lower attractiveness of anatomy study compared to Bachelor students (p=.024).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Nearly half of all students (48%) studied anatomy less than 10 hours per 8-week block.
  • Only 47.9% of students felt their anatomy knowledge was adequate.
  • Conclusions:

    • Medical students perceive challenges in acquiring sufficient anatomy knowledge.
    • Three-dimensional (3D) visualization techniques are suggested by students as a means to improve anatomical understanding.
    • Investment in 3D tools may enhance future anatomy training effectiveness.
