Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore residents' perspectives on the program director's role in assessing and promoting resident wellness.
  • To identify barriers and facilitators to residents seeking assistance for mental health concerns.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 202 residents at a single institution in 2017.
  • Burnout and depression were assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2).
  • Residents reported preferences for assistance services and the PD's role in wellness support.

Main Results:

  • High rates of depression (28%), emotional exhaustion (44%), and depersonalization (62%) were observed.
  • Only 4% of residents had used Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) in the past year.
  • 82% of residents favored PDs inquiring about wellness, and 62% were more likely to use EAP if recommended by their PD.

Conclusions:

  • Residents face significant barriers to seeking help independently.
  • Program directors are vital in promoting resident wellness and facilitating access to support services.
  • Resident engagement with wellness resources increases when PDs are actively involved in recommending and supporting their use.
