    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the validity of Bucur and Madden's (2010) proposal using longitudinal data.
    • To investigate how cognitive load influences age-related cognitive decline in executive functions versus perceptual speed.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized the Yakumo Study longitudinal database with 104 participants.
    • Calculated linear regression coefficients for two tasks: Digit Cancellation Task 1 (D-CAT1) and Digit Cancellation Task 3 (D-CAT3).
    • D-CAT1 was hypothesized to represent elementary perceptual speed with low cognitive load, while D-CAT3 represented executive function with high cognitive load.

    Main Results:

    • Regression coefficients for D-CAT3 showed a significantly steeper decline between ages 65 and 75 compared to D-CAT1.
    • A substantial number of participants exhibited this steeper decline in the executive function task.
    • Results indicate a differential impact of age on cognitive tasks based on their cognitive load.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support Bucur and Madden's (2010) proposal regarding age-related decline in executive functions.
    • The degree of cognitive load appears to significantly affect the rate of age-related cognitive decline.
    • Executive functions are more susceptible to age-related decline, especially under higher cognitive load conditions.
