    Summary

Two cases of fixed drug eruption caused by trimethoprim were documented. This distinct skin reaction features recurring, circular lesions that can hyperpigment and affect mucous membranes upon re-exposure to the medication.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Fixed drug eruption (FDE) is a specific type of adverse drug reaction.
    • It is characterized by recurrent, localized skin lesions upon re-exposure to an offending agent.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of fixed drug eruption attributed to trimethoprim are presented.
    • Lesions initially appear as circular, erythematous patches, progressing to violaceous discoloration.
    • Hyperpigmentation and mucous membrane involvement were noted.

    Findings:

    • Trimethoprim can induce fixed drug eruption.
    • The characteristic recurrence pattern in the same or new areas with subsequent drug challenges was observed.

    Implications:

    • Highlights trimethoprim as a potential cause of fixed drug eruption.
    • Emphasizes the importance of recognizing FDE for accurate diagnosis and drug avoidance.
    • Informs clinical management strategies for patients experiencing adverse drug reactions.
