Trunk muscle function and low back disorders: a ten-year follow-up study.

P Leino, S Aro, J Hasan

    Journal of Chronic Diseases
    |January 1, 1987
    PubMed
    Summary

Low back disorders are linked to poorer trunk muscle function. While poor muscle function may increase risk, existing back problems appear to more significantly impair muscle performance over time.

    Area of Science:

    • Occupational Health
    • Musculoskeletal Disorders
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Low back disorders are a significant occupational health issue.
    • Trunk muscle function is believed to play a role in low back health.
    • Understanding this relationship is crucial for prevention and management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between trunk muscle function and low back disorders in metal industry employees.
    • To examine the association over a 10-year period.
    • To determine the directionality of the effect between muscle function and low back disorders.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional and longitudinal study design.
    • Involved 902 employees initially, with 654 followed up after 10 years.
    • Utilized questionnaires, interviews, clinical examinations, and trunk muscle performance tests.

    Main Results:

    • Inverse association found between clinical low back findings/chronic disease and trunk muscle function.
    • This association was not explained by pain interfering with tests.
    • No link between baseline muscle function and 10-year incidence of disease or symptoms, but poor baseline function slightly increased risk of clinical findings in men.
    • Baseline clinical findings were inversely associated with follow-up muscle function.

    Conclusions:

    • The relationship between low back disorders and trunk muscle function appears bidirectional.
    • Existing low back disorders likely impair trunk muscle function.
    • Poor trunk muscle function may also contribute to the risk of developing low back disorders.
