This study measured the surface roughness of particleboards and fiber-faced panels under varying humidity. Results show significant differences in surface roughness due to humidity exposure, aiding material behavior understanding.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Wood Composites
- Surface Engineering
Background:
- Particleboards and fiber-faced panels are widely used in furniture and construction.
- Understanding surface properties is crucial for material performance and application.
- Melamine-impregnated papers are common decorative and protective overlays.
Purpose of the Study:
- To quantify the surface roughness of particleboards and sandwiched panels with fiber surfaces.
- To evaluate the impact of melamine paper overlay on surface quality.
- To determine the effect of different relative humidity levels on surface roughness and Janka hardness.
Main Methods:
- Experimental manufacturing of particleboards and sandwiched panels.
- Surface roughness measurement using profilometer equipment.
- Janka hardness testing under controlled relative humidity (60% and 95%).
Main Results:
- Surface roughness measurements revealed significant differences between specimens exposed to different relative humidity levels.
- Janka hardness also varied with relative humidity, indicating moisture sensitivity.
- Overlaying with melamine paper influenced the surface roughness characteristics.
Conclusions:
- Relative humidity significantly affects the surface roughness and mechanical properties of fiber-faced panels.
- The findings provide valuable data for predicting the performance of these panels in diverse environmental conditions.
- This research contributes to the understanding of wood composite behavior under varying moisture content.

Classifying Matter by Composition
According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures.
A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated.
A mixture is composed of two or...
