    Summary

    Cellular immune function is impaired in Alzheimer's disease and Down's syndrome. Lymphocyte DNA synthesis was significantly reduced in both patient groups compared to healthy individuals, indicating immune deficits.

    Background:

    • Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Down's syndrome (DS) share pathological features.
    • Immune system dysregulation may contribute to neurodegeneration in both conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate cellular immune function in patients with Alzheimer's disease and Down's syndrome.
    • To compare lymphocyte DNA synthesis and T cell populations between patient groups and healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • In vitro lymphocyte DNA synthesis assays using phytohemagglutinin, pokeweed mitogen, and OKT3 antibody.
    • Quantification of T cells expressing surface membrane orosomucoid.

    Main Results:

    • Significantly decreased lymphocyte DNA synthesis in response to mitogens and antibody in both AD and DS patients compared to controls.
