External Female Genitals01:15

External Female Genitals

35.8K
The vulva encompasses the external structures of the female reproductive system. At the forefront is the monpubis, a cushion of fatty tissue atop the pubic bone. Once puberty sets in, this area typically grows hair. Extending from just behind the mons pubis are the labia majora (labia = 'lips'; majora = 'larger'), which are larger skin fs olds coated with hair. Nestled within are the labia minora (labia = 'lips'; minora = 'smaller'), which are thinner, more...

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Genital01:23

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Genital

1.9K
The genital stage is the final phase of Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosexual development, beginning at puberty, around age 12. During this stage, sexual energy shifts from self-focused interests to external individuals, marking the development of mature adult sexuality. Freud saw this phase as a time of sexual reawakening, with desires directed toward others outside the family. A healthy transition into this stage, according to Freud, signifies the emergence of two key aspects of adult...

Infertility in Females01:28

Infertility in Females

4.9K
Female infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse and affects about 10–15% of couples worldwide. The primary cause of female infertility is ovulatory disorders, which hinder the release of eggs. These disorders can be classified as hypothalamic amenorrhea, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian failure, and hyperprolactinemic anovulation disorders.

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System01:24

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System

4.5K
The female reproductive system can be affected by several disorders, including Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), endometriosis, and various forms of cancer. PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...

Reconstruction of Signal using Interpolation01:10

Reconstruction of Signal using Interpolation

746
Signal processing techniques are essential for accurately converting continuous signals to digital formats and vice versa. When a continuous signal is sampled with a period T, the resulting sampled signal exhibits replicas of the original spectrum in the frequency domain, spaced at intervals equal to the sampling frequency. To handle this sampled signal, a zero-order hold method can be applied, which creates a piecewise constant signal by retaining each sample's value until the next...

Electron Microscope Tomography and Single-particle Reconstruction01:07

Electron Microscope Tomography and Single-particle Reconstruction

2.9K
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be used to determine the 3D structure of biological samples with the help of techniques such as electron microscope tomography and single-particle reconstruction. While single-particle reconstruction can examine macromolecules and macromolecular complexes in vitro conditions only, tomography permits the study of cell components or small cells in vivo.
Electron Tomography
Electron tomography can be performed either in TEM or STEM (scanning transmission...

Summary

Clitoral reconstruction surgery effectively reduces pain and enhances sexual function for survivors of female genital mutilation. This procedure also improves genital appearance and self-image, offering significant benefits.

Area of Science:

  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Female sexual health
  • Genital aesthetics

Background:

  • Female genital mutilation (FGM) can cause significant clitoral pain, sexual dysfunction, and altered genital appearance.
  • Clitoral reconstruction offers a potential solution to mitigate these adverse effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a novel surgical technique for clitorolabial reconstruction using a vaginal graft.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of this reconstruction in improving sexual function and genital self-image.

Main Methods:

  • A series of 32 women underwent clitoral reconstruction using a vaginal graft.
  • Prospective follow-up was conducted to assess outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in sexual function, as measured by the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) (16 to 29, P<.05).
  • Genital self-image also showed significant improvement, assessed by the Female Self-Image Genital Scale (11 to 23, P<.05).

Conclusions:

  • Clitoral reconstruction following FGM is a feasible and effective surgical intervention.
  • The procedure leads to enhanced sexual function and improved genital aesthetic perception in patients.
