Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the risk of secondary education dropout by age 20.
  • To investigate the association with mental health problems diagnosed during general practitioner (GP) consultations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized national registries for a sample of 63,970 Norwegians (ages 15-20).
  • Assessed GP-diagnosed internalizing and externalizing problems.
  • Employed Poisson regression to estimate relative risks (RR), adjusting for health and social factors.

Main Results:

  • Dropout was bivariately related to internalizing (RR=2.2 girls, 1.7 boys) and externalizing problems (RR=2.7 girls, 2.0 boys).
  • Adjusted analyses showed absolute dropout risks of 43% (girls) and 60% (boys) with internalizing problems, and higher risks with externalizing problems.
  • The highest absolute risk was observed for individuals with both internalizing and externalizing problems.

Conclusions:

  • GP intervention for mental health problems may improve adolescent educational outcomes.
  • Addressing mental health issues in adolescents can positively impact their academic trajectories.
  • Early identification and treatment of mental health conditions are vital for preventing school dropout.
