Escape Velocity01:26

Escape Velocity

8.4K
The escape velocity of an object is defined as the minimum initial velocity that it requires to escape the surface of another object to which it is gravitationally bound and never to return. For example, what would be the minimum velocity at which a satellite should be launched from the Earth's surface such that it just escapes the Earth's gravitational field?
To calculate the escape velocity, it is assumed that no energy is lost to any frictional forces. In practice, a satellite...

Escape Velocities of Gases

1.4K
To escape the Earth's gravity, an object near the top of the atmosphere at an altitude of 100 km must travel away from Earth at 11.1 km/s. This speed is called the escape velocity. The temperature at which gas molecules attain the rms speed, which is equal to the escape velocity, can be estimated by using the equation for the average kinetic energy of the gas molecules. According to the kinetic theory of gas, the average kinetic energy of the gas molecules is proportional to its...

Mitral Stenosis I: Introduction

744
Mitral Valve Stenosis (MVS) is a heart condition where the mitral valve narrows, impeding blood circulation from the left atrium to the left ventricle. The etiology and pathophysiology of this condition are multifaceted, leading to a cascade of cardiovascular complications.Causes of Mitral Valve StenosisRheumatic Heart Disease: It is the main cause of mitral valve stenosis, particularly in developing nations. This condition arises from rheumatic fever, an inflammatory illness resulting from...

Mitral Regurgitation I: Introduction

631
Mitral regurgitation is characterized by the backward circulation of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium during systole, a phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart contracts and pumps blood out of the chambers. This abnormal flow occurs primarily due to the dysfunction of the mitral valve or its supporting structures, which include the mitral leaflets, chordae tendineae, annulus, and papillary muscles.Etiology and Mechanisms:Primary Mitral Regurgitation: This type arises from...

Mitral Valve Prolapse I: Introduction

591
IntroductionThe mitral valve, one of the heart's four valves, regulates blood flow. These valves have flaps that open and close to direct blood properly through the heart and body. During each heartbeat, the flaps open for blood to pass through and seal shut to prevent backflow. Specifically, the mitral valve opens to allow blood flow from the heart's upper left chamber to the lower left chamber. It then closes securely as the lower left chamber contracts to pump blood to the body, preventing...

Mitral Regurgitation III: Medical Management

367
Mitral regurgitation (MR) is characterized by retrograde blood circulation from the left ventricle into the left atrium due to inadequate mitral valve closure. The severity of the condition, symptoms, and underlying cause determine treatment strategies.Monitoring and Pharmacological TreatmentPatients with mild to moderate MR typically do not need immediate intervention but regular monitoring to assess progression and guide treatment. Patients with mild MR should have an echocardiogram every 3-5...

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Structural failure is a known complication of artificial heart valves.
  • The Edwards TEKNA mitral valve is a prosthetic device used to replace diseased or damaged mitral valves.

Observation:

  • A patient experienced sudden dyspnea and pulmonary edema 12 years post-implantation of an Edwards TEKNA mitral valve.
  • The patient developed cardiogenic shock, necessitating an emergency mitral valve replacement.

Findings:

  • A leaflet from the mitral valve prosthesis escaped and fractured transversely.
  • Imaging revealed embolized fragments in the aorta and left common iliac artery.
  • The patient suffered watershed cerebral infarction, indicated by visual field abnormalities and CT scans.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a rare but serious complication of prosthetic mitral valve failure.
  • Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for managing leaflet escape and embolic events.
  • Further research into long-term durability and failure mechanisms of artificial valves is warranted.
