What is Behavior?00:54

What is Behavior?

10.3K
Behaviors are actions that an organism engages in—they can be related to finding food, reproducing, defending against threats, and many other possible actions. Behaviors include activities related to the environment around the animal—such as migration—as well as social interactions within a species or population. Many behaviors involve motor output—that is, muscle movements—while others involve less visible actions, such as learning.

Behaviorism

5.3K
The field of behaviorism was pioneered by figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B.F. Skinner fundamentally shifted the focus of psychology to the observable and controllable aspects of human and animal behavior. This shift marked a critical evolution in the discipline, emphasizing scientific rigor and experimental methodology.
The core premise of behaviorism is its focus on observable behavior rather than internal thoughts or feelings. This approach argues that true scientific...

Friedman Two-way Analysis of Variance by Ranks

512
Friedman's Two-Way Analysis of Variance by Ranks is a nonparametric test designed to identify differences across multiple test attempts when traditional assumptions of normality and equal variances do not apply. Unlike conventional ANOVA, which requires normally distributed data with equal variances, Friedman's test is ideal for ordinal or non-normally distributed data, making it particularly useful for analyzing dependent samples, such as matched subjects over time or repeated measures...

Behavior Therapy

735
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Plastic Behavior01:21

Plastic Behavior

585
A material's elastic behavior is characterized by the disappearance of stress once the load is removed, allowing the material to return to its original state. However, when stress surpasses the yield point, yielding commences, marking the onset of plastic deformation or permanent set. This change from elastic to plastic behavior is influenced by the peak stress value and the duration before the load is removed. An intriguing observation occurs when a specimen is loaded, unloaded, and...

Summary

Preference assessments (PAs) may not predict treatment utility. This study found that stimulus rank from PAs did not consistently predict compliance for children with escape-maintained problem behavior across different demand levels.

Area of Science:

  • Behavior analysis
  • Applied behavior analysis
  • Clinical psychology

Background:

  • Preference assessments (PAs) are used to identify preferred stimuli for individuals.
  • However, low response requirements in PAs may not accurately predict stimulus utility in treatment settings.
  • This is particularly relevant for individuals with escape-maintained problem behavior.

Observation:

  • The study investigated the relationship between preference assessment (PA) rank and demand elasticity.
  • Demand elasticity was measured by examining stimulus selection across five fixed-ratio values.
  • The participants were children with escape-maintained problem behavior.

Findings:

  • Three distinct patterns emerged regarding the relationship between PA rank and stimulus selection.
  • Some stimuli were selected equally across all demand levels.
  • Higher-ranked stimuli were selected more frequently at higher demand levels, while other patterns showed mixed correspondence.

Implications:

  • Preference assessment rank does not reliably predict how well stimuli will support compliance in treatment.
  • Clinicians should consider demand elasticity when selecting stimuli for interventions.
  • Further research is needed to refine preference assessment methods for treatment utility prediction.
