Summary

Background:

Osteocytes reside within lacunae in bone tissue.
Ectopic bone formation is a complex biological process.
Understanding osteocyte density in ectopic bone is crucial for regenerative medicine.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the osteocytic lacunae frequency in intramuscularly implanted demineralized incisors with orthotopic femoral bone.
To investigate the cellular characteristics of newly formed ectopic bone.

Main Methods:

Demineralized incisors were implanted intramuscularly in rats.
Bone samples were evaluated 65 days post-implantation.
Osteocytic lacunae frequency was quantified per 1000 μm2 using the 'weight of bone picture' method.

Main Results:

The mean frequency of osteocytic lacunae was significantly higher in ectopic bone derived from demineralized incisors (1.10 ± 0.19 per 1000 μm2) compared to orthotopic femoral bone (0.91 ± 0.16 per 1000 μm2).
Surface area measurements were performed using the 'weight of bone picture' technique.

Conclusions:

Intramuscular implantation of demineralized incisors results in ectopic bone with a higher density of osteocytic lacunae than native bone.
These findings contribute novel data to the understanding of ectopic bone biology and osteocyte development in non-native environments.
