    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Oral Biology
    • Genetics

    Background:

    • Down syndrome (DS) is associated with altered immune responses.
    • Gingivitis is a common inflammatory condition of the gums.
    • Understanding immune cell dynamics in DS during inflammation is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate immune cell changes in gingival biopsies from a child with Down syndrome and a sibling.
    • To analyze the effects of experimental gingivitis on T and B cell populations.

    Main Methods:

    • Gingival biopsies were obtained from a child with Down syndrome and a sibling.
    • Experimental gingivitis was induced.
    • Monoclonal antibodies were used for immunophenotyping of immune cells.

    Main Results:

    • Plaque induced an initial shift from T cell predominance to B cell predominance.
    • Subsequently, T cells gradually increased, and B cells showed a looser arrangement.
    • These changes were observed in both individuals, suggesting a conserved response pattern.

    Conclusions:

    • Experimental gingivitis triggers dynamic immune cell shifts in the gingiva.
    • The observed changes in T and B cell populations may have implications for understanding oral health in Down syndrome.
