Summary

Implanted ports are safe and effective for adults with primary immune deficiency receiving immunoglobulin G (IgG) therapy when subcutaneous infusions are not feasible. These ports provide reliable venous access for IgG replacement therapy.

Background:

  • Primary immune deficiency (PID) often necessitates immunoglobulin G (IgG) replacement therapy.
  • Accessing veins for regular IgG infusions can be challenging in adults with PID.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility and safety of implanted ports for monthly IgG infusions in adults with PID.
  • To assess patient preference for intravenous (IV) versus subcutaneous (SC) IgG administration.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of adults with PID evaluated between 2006-2016.
  • Analysis of patients requiring implanted ports due to inadequate venous access for IgG therapy.

Main Results:

  • 20 out of 606 patients (3.3%) required implanted ports for IgG therapy.
  • 17 of these patients preferred IV infusions via ports over at-home SC infusions.
  • No port-related infections, thrombosis, or other adverse events were observed during treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Implanted ports are a safe and effective option for PID patients needing IgG therapy when SC administration is not suitable.
  • Port utility and safety in PID patients appear comparable to those in the general population.
