Intravenous with intrathecal interferon in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis

Concurrent interferon treatment for subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) showed limited clinical improvement in only three of twelve patients. This interferon therapy for SSPE is not considered promising due to minimal efficacy and potential side effects.

Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the efficacy and safety of combined intravenous and intrathecal interferon ALFA-2a in treating subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE).

- Twelve patients diagnosed with SSPE underwent treatment with recombinant interferon ALFA-2a via both intravenous and intrathecal routes.
- Diagnosis was confirmed using clinical evaluation, EEG, CT scans, and CSF analysis for measles IgG antibodies.
- Treatment dosages varied, and patient outcomes were monitored using the Neurological disability index.
Main Results:
- Clinical improvement was observed in three out of twelve patients, with one maintaining improvement long-term.
- Two patients relapsed after therapy cessation.
- No significant changes were noted in EEG, and a decrease in CSF anti-measles antibody titers correlated with improvement in only two patients. Two patients developed iatrogenic meningitis, which was successfully treated. Three patients died during the study.
