Summary

Dengue fever (DF) is a potential health concern in Southeast Iran. This study detected dengue virus (nonstructural protein 1 antigen, IgM, and IgG) in 11% of suspected patients, indicating possible local transmission.

Background:

  • Previous research indicates the presence of potential mosquito vectors for DF in the Sistan and Baluchestan province.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the seroprevalence and etiological evidence of dengue fever in clinically suspected patients in Southeast Iran.
  • To determine the presence of dengue virus nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) antigen and specific antibodies (IgM and IgG).

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted from April 2013 to August 2015.
  • Sixty clinically suspected patients in Sistan and Baluchestan province were tested for dengue virus NS1 antigen, IgM, and IgG antibodies.
  • Diagnostic tests included NS1 antigen detection, and immunoglobulin M and G antibody assays.

Main Results:

  • Dengue virus NS1 antigen was detected in 5% (3/60) of samples.
  • Dengue-specific IgM and/or IgG antibodies were detected in 11% (7/60) of the samples.
  • Five patients were identified as acutely infected, with two showing simultaneous NS1 antigen and antibody presence.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest that dengue fever is a potential public health concern in Southeast Iran.
  • The detection of viral antigens and antibodies supports the hypothesis of local dengue virus transmission.
  • Ongoing surveillance and vector control are recommended to prevent future outbreaks in the region.
