Summary

Applying semipermeable membranes to preterm infants (≤30 weeks) significantly reduced hypernatremia incidence and improved weight recovery. This intervention is safe and effective for premature newborns.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if early application of semipermeable membranes (Tegaderm™) in preterm infants (≤30 weeks gestational age) reduces the incidence of hypernatremia within the first 15 days of life.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involved 164 preterm infants (≤30 weeks gestational age).
  • Infants were randomly assigned to either receive a semipermeable membrane or no membrane for the first 15 days of life.
