Introduction to z Scores01:06

Introduction to z Scores

11.3K
A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one.

Peripheral Arterial Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Evaluation

Clinical manifestationsPeripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) manifests through a range of symptoms, from the characteristic intermittent claudication to atypical presentations and severe complications in advanced stages. Intermittent claudication, a hallmark symptom of PAD, presents as exercise-induced muscle pain that typically resolves within minutes of rest. This pain is reproducible and stems from inadequate blood flow, leading to the accumulation of lactic acid produced during anaerobic...

z Scores and Unusual Values

11.1K
The z score is one of the three measures of relative standing. It describes the location of a value in a dataset relative to the mean. z scores are obtained after the standardization of the values in a dataset. The z score for the mean is 0.
This score indicates how far a value is from the mean in terms of standard deviation. For example, if a data value has a z score of +1, the researcher can infer that the particular data value is one standard deviation above the mean. If another data...

Summary

A new electronic wrist scoring system, the Lyon wrist score (LWS), has been developed to include forearm rotation and patient-reported outcomes. This comprehensive tool offers a visual display for tracking wrist conditions and comparing treatment effectiveness.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Clinical Assessment
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Limited availability of current wrist scoring systems.
  • Existing systems often lack forearm rotation assessment.
  • Need for comprehensive and updated wrist evaluation tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Introduce the Lyon wrist score (LWS), an electronic clinical assessment tool.
  • Present the Subjective Wrist Value (SWV), a patient-generated evaluation criterion.
  • Integrate forearm rotation into wrist scoring.

Main Methods:

  • Development of an electronic Lyon wrist score (LWS) in Excel.
  • Inclusion of Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain and function (flexion-extension and pronation-supination).
  • Incorporation of active range of motion, strength, and SWV.

Main Results:

  • LWS available in standard and full versions (including forearm rotation strength).
  • Automatic generation of a diamond-shaped graph for visual display of wrist status.
  • Integration of LWS and SWV into a graph exportable to PowerPoint for clinical comparison.

Conclusions:

  • The LWS provides a comprehensive electronic display of osteoarticular wrist status.
  • Includes crucial forearm rotation criteria, addressing a gap in current systems.
  • Offers a practical tool for clinical analysis and outcome comparison.
