    Background:

    • The anterolateral abdominal wall muscles may enhance lumbar stability.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review and assess the contribution of these mechanisms to vertebral stability.
    • To investigate the structural and mechanical properties of the thoracolumbar fascia.

    • Dissection and microscopy of thoracolumbar fascia layers.
    • Computed axial tomography during back flexion and Valsalva maneuver.
    • Experimental tensioning of fascia in isolated spinal segments and whole cadavers.

    Main Results:

    • Stabilizing action of thoracolumbar fascia appears less significant than previously thought.
    • Fascial tension and intra-abdominal pressure provide similar, relatively small resistance to sagittal plane bending.
    • Middle layer of thoracolumbar fascia shows clear stabilizing influence in lateral bending.

    Conclusions:

    • Lumbar stability mechanisms involving abdominal muscles, thoracolumbar fascia, and intra-abdominal pressure are less influential than hypothesized.
    • Further in vivo research on the thoracolumbar fascia's role in lateral bending is warranted.
