Background:

Methylmethacrylate monomer (MMA) is a common component in acrylic bone cements used in orthopedic surgery.
MMA is known to cause sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis in healthcare workers.
Standard surgical gloves offer inadequate protection against MMA penetration.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the protective efficacy of different surgical gloves against methylmethacrylate monomer (MMA) penetration.
To identify suitable glove materials for orthopedic surgeons and nurses handling bone cements.
To recommend appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent MMA-induced sensitization.

Main Methods:

Gas chromatographic measurements were used to quantify MMA penetration through various glove materials.
The penetration time of MMA through ordinary surgical rubber gloves, a three-layered PVP glove, and a viton-butyl rubber glove was assessed.
Glove thickness and material composition were key factors in the evaluation.

Main Results:

Ordinary surgical rubber gloves were penetrated by MMA in less than 1 minute.
A three-layered PVP glove (0.07 mm thick) demonstrated impermeability to MMA for 20 minutes.
A viton-butyl rubber glove (0.27 mm thick) provided protection for 15 minutes.

Conclusions:

The three-layered PVP glove offers significantly better protection against MMA compared to ordinary surgical gloves and viton-butyl rubber gloves.
Healthcare professionals, particularly orthopedic surgeons and nurses, should utilize PVP gloves when handling acrylic bone cements.
The use of appropriate gloves is crucial for preventing MMA sensitization and protecting individuals with known MMA allergies.
