Summary

Background:

  • Cardiovascular risk factors are common in patients with impaired kidney function and macroalbuminuria.
  • The association between normal-range albuminuria/renal function and cardiovascular health in the general population is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between normal-range albuminuria and renal function with cardiovascular function in the general population.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of the NEO study (n=6503).
  • Assessed urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), intima-media thickness, pulse wave velocity, and cardiac imaging.
  • Used multiple linear regression, adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors.

Main Results:

  • Adjusted analyses showed positive associations between UACR and eGFR with left ventricle (LV) mass index and LV cardiac index.
  • Albuminuria was weakly associated with arterial thickness and arterial stiffness.
  • No associations were found for LV ejection fraction or LV diastolic function.

Conclusions:

  • Normal-range albuminuria is associated with increased LV mass index, LV cardiac index, arterial thickness, and arterial stiffness.
  • Albuminuria serves as a marker for cardiovascular health, even within the normal range.
