Summary

General practitioners (GPs) are less likely to screen psoriasis patients for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors compared to those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Awareness of increased CVD risk in psoriasis remains low among GPs.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Rheumatology
  • Cardiology
  • General Practice

Background:

  • Systemic inflammatory diseases like psoriasis, SLE, and RA are linked to higher rates of cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
  • Understanding comorbidities in psoriasis is crucial for comprehensive patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate general practitioner (GP) screening practices for common comorbidities in psoriasis patients.
  • To assess GP awareness of the elevated cardiovascular risk associated with psoriasis.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire adapted from Parsi et al. (2012) was distributed to GP residents and consultants.
  • 372 questionnaires were collected and analyzed to compare screening practices and awareness levels.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Physicians screened for CV risk factors more frequently in patients with RA and SLE than in those with psoriasis.
  • No significant differences were found in awareness or screening practices between GP residents and consultants, or across residency phases.

Conclusions:

  • Most GPs are unaware of the heightened cardiovascular risk in psoriasis patients.
  • GPs tend to prioritize screening for CVD risk in RA and SLE over psoriasis.
