Abstract:
The sequential development of postural reactions was examined in 20 infants with Down syndrome aged two to 24 months, and was compared to the sequence for non-handicapped infants. Protective reactions appeared relatively earlier in the sequential pattern for infants with Down syndrome than for non-handicapped infants. The study documents dissimilar sequences of postural reaction development for the two infant groups. The data suggest that both the delay and the dissimilar sequence of postural reactions should be considered when evaluating the motor development and movement quality of infants with Down syndrome.
