Summary

Rhythmical massage therapy (RMT) significantly stimulates the autonomic nervous system, improving heart rate variability (HRV). The long-term cardiovascular benefits of RMT are most pronounced without aromatic oils, unlike temporary effects seen with them.

Purpose of the Study:

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial involving 44 healthy women.

  • 24-hour Holter electrocardiograms (ECGs) were recorded before and after a standardized stress situation and intervention.

  • RMT without aromatic oil (RM) showed the most relevant long-term effect on HRV after 24 hours.
  • Sham massage (SM) resulted in considerably less pronounced physiological effects on HRV compared to RMT.

Conclusions:

  • RMT induces specific and marked stimulation of the autonomic nervous system.
  • The long-term cardiovascular benefits are primarily attributed to the rhythmic massage itself, not aromatic oils.
  • RMT offers a distinct physiological effect on cardiovascular regulation compared to sham interventions.
