  • Autopsy revealed lungs with gelatinous material and firm, tan-white nodules.
  • Enlarged tracheobronchial lymph nodes and mineralized arterial plaques were also noted.

Findings:

  • Histopathology identified yeast consistent with Blastomyces dermatitidis (10-20 μm, double-contoured walls, broad-based budding).
  • DNA sequencing confirmed the presence of B. dermatitidis.
  • The fungal infection was associated with significant pulmonary and lymph node pathology.

  • Blastomyces dermatitidis should be included in the differential diagnosis for llamas with respiratory disease.
  • This case highlights the potential for B. dermatitidis to cause severe pulmonary disease in camelids.
  • Further research into the epidemiology and clinical presentation of blastomycosis in llamas is warranted.
