A new dimension in documentation: the PIE method.

• A 43-bed neurology/neurosurgery unit implemented the Problem Identification, Intervention, and Evaluation (PIE) documentation method.
• The PIE method integrates the plan of care into nursing progress notes, using a problem list for nursing diagnoses and a flow sheet for routine tasks.

Findings:

• Implementation of the PIE method led to increased quality of nursing documentation.
• Time spent on charting decreased significantly after adopting the PIE method.
• Nurses demonstrated enhanced professional accountability and credibility through documented interventions and evaluations.
