Summary

Intellectual deterioration occurred in less than a third of adults with Down's syndrome over 35 years. This challenges previous assumptions linking cognitive decline in older Down's syndrome patients directly to Alzheimer's disease.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Genetics
  • Developmental Psychology

Background:

  • Previous studies suggested cognitive decline in Down's syndrome over 35 years indicates Alzheimer's disease.
  • This was often correlated with post-mortem findings of Alzheimer's neuropathology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of intellectual deterioration in adults with Down's syndrome over 35 years.
  • To examine the relationship between age, self-care skills, and behavioral disturbances in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of Down's syndrome patients aged 19-49 years.
  • Assessed intellectual functioning, self-care skills, and behavioral disturbances.

Main Results:

  • Intellectual deterioration was present in less than one-third of Down's syndrome patients over 35 years.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No significant correlation found between chronological age and self-care skills or disturbed behavior.
  • Conclusions:

    • The findings question the universal link between aging over 35 in Down's syndrome and Alzheimer's disease-like cognitive decline.
    • Highlights the need for revised interpretations of neuropathological data and improved methodologies for future research.
