Empathy02:34

Empathy

10.1K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching II: Planning and Implementation

2.1K
Planning for learning involves the development of a teaching plan. Teaching plans are similar to nursing care plans—both follow the steps of the nursing process. Planning in the teaching process involves setting goals and outcomes. Here, goals identify what a patient needs to achieve to understand a healthcare topic better, whereas the outcomes are the action to be performed by the patient to achieve the goal within a timeframe. For example, if the goal is to educate the patient about...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

2.5K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching III: Evaluation and Documentation

2.6K
Evaluation of the teaching process enables the nurse to determine if the patient's learning needs were met and if training was effective. If the expected outcomes are not met, the care plan is revised, and additional education or reinforcement is provided. Nurses can ask questions after the session or obtain feedback to assess the patient's understanding of the topic.
Nurses can use several methods to evaluate patient outcomes. For example, oral questions can assess cognitive learning,...

Imprinting01:22

Imprinting

11.2K
Behavioral imprinting is observed in some newborn animals and occurs when they develop strong and specific attachments to another animal (usually a parent) following brief, early-life exposures. Offspring imprint onto parents within a brief period after birth or hatching; this time window is called the critical period. Once imprinting occurs, the bond established between the parents and their offspring is usually long-lasting.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Animal Behavior
  • Evolutionary Biology

Background:

  • Empathy is often considered a human trait, but non-human animals display empathic behaviors like emotional contagion, consolation, and helping.
  • Rodent models are valuable for investigating the neural underpinnings of empathy due to advanced research techniques.
  • Understanding animal empathy can illuminate social deficits in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review recent advancements in rodent empathy research.
  • To highlight behavioral paradigms and neuronal correlates of emotional contagion in rodents.
  • To explore the potential of rodent models for understanding human empathy and social behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on rodent empathy.
