Background:
Retrospective analysis of post-operative vomiting (POV) in non-human primates at our institution was 11%. Based on this additional risk factor for post-operative complications, we aimed to eliminate or decrease POV by adding an antiemetic, maropitant citrate, to the pre-medication protocol.
Methods:
Retrospective and prospective data were collected over a 5-year period from 46 macaques of two species during 155 procedures. Additionally, blood was collected from five Macaca mulatta to perform a pharmacokinetic analysis.
Results:
A 1 mg/kg subcutaneous dose of maropitant given pre-operatively significantly decreased POV. Findings indicated post-neurosurgical emesis in Macaca fasicularis was significantly greater than in Macaca mulatta. Pharmacokinetic analysis of maropitant in Macaca mulatta determined the mean maximum plasma concentration to be 113 ng/mL.
Conclusions:
Maropitant administration prior to anesthesia for neurosurgeries decreased our incidence of POV to 1%. The plasma concentration reaches the proposed plasma level for clinical efficacy approximately 20 minutes after administration.
Insights
Adding maropitant citrate to pre-medication protocols significantly reduced post-operative vomiting (POV) in non-human primates. This antiemetic intervention decreased POV incidence from 11% to 1% in macaques undergoing neurosurgery.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Anesthesiology
- Primate Medicine
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Post-operative vomiting (POV) in non-human primates occurred at an 11% incidence.
- POV represents a significant risk factor for post-operative complications in macaques.
- The study sought to mitigate POV by incorporating an antiemetic into the pre-medication protocol.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of maropitant citrate in reducing POV in non-human primates undergoing neurosurgery.
- To compare the incidence of post-neurosurgical emesis between different macaque species.
- To determine the pharmacokinetic profile of maropitant in Macaca mulatta.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective and prospective data collection over 5 years from 46 macaques (two species) across 155 procedures.
- Administration of a 1 mg/kg subcutaneous dose of maropitant pre-operatively.
- Pharmacokinetic analysis of maropitant in five Macaca mulatta.
Main Results:
- Pre-operative maropitant administration significantly decreased POV incidence.
- Macaca fasicularis exhibited significantly higher rates of post-neurosurgical emesis compared to Macaca mulatta.
- Maropitant pharmacokinetic analysis in Macaca mulatta yielded a mean maximum plasma concentration of 113 ng/mL.
Conclusions:
- Maropitant citrate administration effectively reduced POV incidence to 1% following anesthesia for neurosurgeries.
- The antiemetic's plasma concentration reached effective levels approximately 20 minutes post-administration.
- Maropitant is a valuable tool for managing POV in non-human primates, with species-specific considerations.

The hand washing procedure itself includes the following steps. First, cover cuts, if any, on hands with a waterproof dressing. Cuts and abrasions can become contaminated with bacteria hindering the ability to clean the area thoroughly. In addition, repeated hand washing can worsen an injury. The nails must be short and clean, without nail...
