Background:

  • Edentulism is common, with complete dentures (CD) and removable partial dentures (RPD) being frequent treatment options.
  • The quality of the prosthesis and patient quality of life can be improved by selecting appropriate impression techniques and materials based on individual oral conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of different final impression techniques and materials on complete dentures (CD) regarding retention, stability, comfort, and quality of life.
  • To evaluate the effects of various final impression techniques and materials for removable partial dentures (RPD) on stability, comfort, overextension, and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing different final impression techniques and materials for CD and RPD.
  • Searched multiple databases including Cochrane Oral Health, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and Embase up to November 2017.
  • Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were performed independently by two reviewers; results were synthesized using risk ratios and mean differences.

Main Results:

  • Nine studies (485 participants for CD, 72 for RPD) were included, with most assessed as high risk of bias.
  • Evidence quality for comparisons and outcomes was generally low or very low, necessitating cautious interpretation.
  • No clear evidence emerged favoring specific techniques or materials for either complete or removable partial dentures regarding quality of life or denture quality.

Conclusions:

  • There is insufficient high-quality evidence to support the superiority of any particular final impression technique or material for fabricating complete or removable partial dentures.
  • The current evidence base is limited and of low to very low quality, highlighting the need for more rigorous, high-quality randomized controlled trials.
