Tissues

85.7K
Cells with similar structure and function are grouped into tissues. A group of tissues with a specialized function is called an organ. There are four main types of tissue in vertebrates: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous.

Tissues

69.4K
Tissues are a group of cells that share a common embryonic origin. Microscopic observation reveals that the cells in a tissue share morphological features and are arranged in an orderly pattern to perform specific functions. From an evolutionary perspective, tissues appear in more complex organisms. Although there are many types of cells in the human body, they are organized into four broad categories of tissues: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous. Each of these categories is...

Short-distance Transport of Resources02:12

Short-distance Transport of Resources

17.8K
Short-distance transport refers to transport that occurs over a distance of just 2-3 cells, crossing the plasma membrane in the process. Small uncharged molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, can diffuse across the plasma membrane on their own. In contrast, ions and larger molecules require the assistance of transport proteins due to their charge or size. Transport across membranes also occurs within individual cells, playing a variety of essential roles for the plant as a whole.

Plant Cells and Tissues02:01

Plant Cells and Tissues

65.9K
Plant tissues are collections of similar cells performing related functions. Different plant tissues will have their own specialized roles and can be combined with other tissues to form organs such as flowers, fruit, stem, and leaves. Two major types of plant tissue include meristematic and permanent tissue.

Plant Tissue Culture02:57

Plant Tissue Culture

40.8K
Plant tissue culture is widely used in both primary and applied science. Applications range from plant development studies to functional gene studies, crop improvement, commercial micropropagation, virus elimination, and conservation of rare species.

Tissue Membranes01:27

Tissue Membranes

8.5K
A tissue membrane is a thin layer of cells that covers the outside of the body, the organs, internal passageways that lead to the exterior of the body, and the lining of the moveable joint cavities. There are two basic types of tissue membranes— connective tissue and epithelial membranes.
Connective Tissue Membranes
The connective tissue membrane is formed solely from connective tissue. These membranes encapsulate organs, such as the kidneys, and line our movable joints. A synovial...

Area of Science:

  • Comparative genomics
  • Systems biology
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • Translating findings from model organisms to humans is crucial for understanding biological processes and diseases.
  • Identifying molecular similarities and differences across species requires comprehensive multi-organism tissue expression data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a database of gene-tissue associations across human, mouse, rat, and pig.
  • To provide a resource for comparing molecular data between different organisms.

Main Methods:

  • Integrated transcriptomics and proteomics data from multiple sources.
  • Developed a scoring scheme for cross-evidence and cross-organism comparability.
  • Manually curated and mined scientific literature for gene-tissue associations.

Main Results:

  • Created the TISSUES database (version 2.0) with gene-tissue associations for four species.
  • Assigned confidence scores to gene-tissue associations.
  • Analyzed dataset agreement, finding data quality to be the primary factor influencing consistency.

Conclusions:

  • The TISSUES database facilitates cross-species molecular comparisons.
  • Data quality significantly impacts the reliability of gene-tissue association studies.
  • The database is accessible via a web interface and as a Cytoscape app.
