  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases (PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Saudi Digital Library) from July 2016 to October 2016.
  • Inclusion criteria were applied to filter 2132 identified articles, resulting in the final selection of 20 studies for full-text review.
  • The selected studies comprised a total of 2046 patients with psoriasis and 6508 healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • Out of 20 reviewed studies, 14 indicated a positive correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and psoriasis.
  • These 14 studies involved 1249 patients with psoriasis and 680 controls.
  • The remaining six studies did not find a significant positive correlation between Vitamin D deficiency and psoriasis.

Conclusions:

  • A correlation between psoriasis and Vitamin D deficiency is suggested by the current evidence.
  • Larger-scale, well-designed case-control studies are necessary to definitively establish the role of Vitamin D deficiency in the pathogenesis and progression of psoriasis.
