Atmospheric stability can be assessed using both traditional meteorological data and radon activity concentration (RAC). This study found RAC generally agrees with stability indexes, despite some differences in diurnal and seasonal variations.
Area of Science:
- Atmospheric Science
- Environmental Monitoring
- Radiochemistry
Background:
- Atmospheric stability is crucial for dispersion modeling.
- Traditional methods rely on meteorological data for stability classes.
- Radon activity concentration (RAC) is a potential indicator of atmospheric stability and vertical dispersion.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare atmospheric stability assessments using radon data and traditional meteorological methods.
- To analyze diurnal and seasonal variations of radon activity concentration and stability indexes.
- To investigate the relationship between radon activity concentration and stability indexes.
Main Methods:
- Collected atmospheric radon data in Bratislava, Slovakia over one year.
- Calculated stability indexes (SI) using a modified Turner method.
- Analyzed time series, diurnal, and seasonal variations of RAC and SI.
- Investigated time lags between RAC and meteorological variables.
Main Results:
- Radon activity concentration (RAC) time series lagged behind Turner stability classes by approximately 5 hours.
- Seasonal trends showed lower variability in stability classes compared to RAC.
- Unlike stability indexes, outdoor radon concentration did not increase with wind speed.
- Despite discrepancies, RAC and SI showed good overall agreement, especially when comparing daily deviations.
Conclusions:
- Radon activity concentration can serve as a complementary indicator for atmospheric stability.
- Deviations in RAC can be utilized to infer diurnal variations in stability indexes.
- A roughly linear relationship exists between average RAC and calculated stability indexes over extended periods.
