Impulse01:13

Impulse

21.7K
According to Newton’s second law of motion, the rate of change of the momentum of an object is the net external force acting on it. The total change in momentum between two timepoints thus depends on both the external force acting on it and the time over which it acts. Describing this mathematically, the total change of an object’s motion is proportional to the force vector and the time over which it is applied. This product is called impulse.
Additionally, it can be shown that the...

Impulse Response01:17

Impulse Response

772
The impulse response is the system's reaction to an input impulse. In an RC circuit, the voltage source is the input, and the capacitor's voltage is the output. The system's state and output response before and after input excitation are distinctly defined.
Kirchhoff's law forms an input signal equation, with the capacitor's current and voltage providing the output. Substituting the current and dividing by RC yields a differential equation. The output for an impulse input is the impulse...

Relationship Formation

46.3K
What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Ending Relationships01:28

Ending Relationships

205
The dissolution of intimate relationships presents complex emotional and psychological challenges, particularly when emotional bonds are strong, the relationship is long-standing, and perceived alternatives are limited. This distress often intensifies in romantic breakups, where the initiator may experience greater turmoil than the rejected partner. Contributing factors include residual attachment, guilt over causing pain, and uncertainty about how to manage the situation. The stress is further...

Principle of Impulse and Moment01:15

Principle of Impulse and Moment

530
When one considers a rigid body undergoing a plane motion, which is essentially a blend of translational and rotational movement, the application of Newton's second law gives the formula for the translational movement of such a body. If this equation is multiplied by a time interval, dt, and then integrated over the limits of integration, it results in an equation that embodies the principle of linear impulse.

Summary

Methamphetamine (MA) use is linked to increased self-reported impulsivity. Problem severity in regular MA users predicts higher self-reported impulsiveness, but not behavioral impulsivity measures.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychology
  • Addiction Research

Background:

  • Psychostimulant abuse, particularly methamphetamine (MA), is associated with heightened impulsivity.
  • Previous studies show impulsivity differences between MA users and non-users.
  • Limited understanding exists regarding impulsivity variability within MA users and its relation to problem severity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between impulsivity and methamphetamine use severity.
  • To determine if MA use severity predicts impulsivity in regular MA users.

Main Methods:

  • 177 non-treatment seeking regular MA users completed self-report and behavioral impulsivity measures.
  • Structural equation modeling (SEM) analyzed the association between MA use problem severity and impulsivity.

Main Results:

  • Greater MA use severity was linked to higher self-reported impulsiveness.
  • No significant relationship was found between MA use severity and behavioral impulsivity measures.

Conclusions:

  • Methamphetamine use is associated with increased self-reported impulsivity.
  • Impulsivity should be evaluated as a multidimensional construct in MA users.
