Barber hair clippers in South Africa are frequently contaminated with blood and hepatitis B virus (HBV), posing a transmission risk. While HIV was not detected, further research is needed to assess risks and promote safe practices for clean-shave haircuts.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Infectious Diseases
- Virology
Background:
- The popular clean-shave haircut in South Africa is associated with bleeding.
- South Africa has a high prevalence of HIV infection.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the contamination rates of barber hair clippers with blood, HIV, and hepatitis B virus (HBV).
Main Methods:
- Fifty barbers in Cape Town, South Africa, provided hair clippers used for clean-shave haircuts.
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect blood (HBB), HIV, and HBV DNA on clippers.
Main Results:
- 42% of clippers tested positive for blood (HBB).
- 8% of clippers (4 out of 50) tested positive for HBV DNA.
- No clippers tested positive for HIV, but HBV DNA was detected at levels posing a transmission risk.
Conclusions:
- Barber clippers are significantly contaminated with blood and blood-borne viruses like HBV.
- The risk of HBV transmission from contaminated clippers is a concern.
- Further studies are needed to evaluate sterilization practices and the association of clean-shave haircuts with viral infections, advocating for individual clipper ownership.
