  • Thyroid function was categorized by thyrotropin (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) levels; anemia was defined by hemoglobin (Hb) concentration.

Main Results:

  • Overt hypothyroidism (OHypo) was associated with a small decrease in Hb concentration cross-sectionally.
  • Prospective analysis showed no significant association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and Hb change or anemia risk.
  • Hazard ratios for anemia in subclinical hypothyroidism (SHypo) and subclinical hyperthyroidism (SHyper) were not statistically significant.

  • Subclinical thyroid dysfunction is not associated with changes in Hb concentration or increased anemia risk in a prospective, population-based cohort.
  • Variations in Hb concentration in overt thyroid dysfunction were not clinically significant.
  • The study provides evidence that thyroid dysfunction's impact on hemoglobin and anemia risk may not be clinically relevant.
