Summary

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients have a higher prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study found a significant association between AS and COPD, underscoring the importance of smoking cessation and potential COPD screening for AS patients.

  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a severe spondyloarthropathy with known extra-articular manifestations.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is linked to autoimmune diseases, but the AS-COPD association is understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Main Methods:

  • A population-based cross-sectional study utilized electronic medical records from Clalit Health Services in Israel.
  • Patients were identified with AS or COPD based on documented diagnoses.
  • Logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, gender, and smoking status was performed.

Main Results:

  • The study included 4,076 AS patients and 20,290 controls.
  • COPD prevalence was significantly higher in AS patients (46%) compared to controls (18%), p < .001.
  • A significant independent association between AS and COPD was found (OR 1.225, p = .031).

Conclusions:

  • The findings support a link between Ankylosing spondylitis and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • This reinforces the connection between COPD and autoimmune conditions.
  • The results emphasize smoking cessation for AS patients and suggest considering COPD screening.
