Regular exercise can reduce anxiety responses to unpredictable threats. This study found exercise specifically lowered defensive reactions to uncertain dangers, not predictable ones, offering insights into exercise as an anxiety intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how exercise influences defensive responses to predictable versus unpredictable threats in healthy individuals.
  • To explore the differential effects of exercise on fear and anxiety states.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-four healthy volunteers completed 30-minute sessions of moderate-intensity exercise (60-70% heart rate reserve) and low-intensity control activity (10-20% heart rate reserve).
  • Defensive responses were measured using eyeblink startle reflex during a Neutral-Predictable-Unpredictable threat test involving shock stimuli.

Main Results:

  • Exercise significantly reduced startle potentiation during the unpredictable threat condition (P = .031).
  • No significant effect of exercise was observed on startle potentiation during the predictable threat condition (P = .609).

Conclusions:

  • Exercise specifically attenuates defensive responses to unpredictable threats, differentiating it from responses to predictable threats.
  • This dissociation suggests exercise may be a targeted intervention for anxiety related to uncertainty and provides insight into its neurobehavioral mechanisms.
