Summary

Electron beam radiotherapy can trigger bullous pemphigoid by altering skin antigens. This radiation-induced skin condition responded well to tetracycline and niacinamide treatment.

Observation:

  • A patient developed bullous pemphigoid after electron beam therapy for lymph node metastasis.
  • The skin lesions were initially localized to the irradiated area.

Findings:

  • Electron beam radiotherapy may alter or unmask the bullous pemphigoid antigen.
  • This alteration may trigger an autoimmune response and autoantibody production.
  • The patient's condition responded to tetracycline and niacinamide.

Implications:

  • Radiotherapy might induce or exacerbate autoimmune skin conditions.
  • Further research into radiation-induced autoimmunity is warranted.
  • Tetracycline and niacinamide show potential as treatments for radiation-associated bullous pemphigoid.
