  • Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is an autoimmune blistering disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of esophageal involvement in newly diagnosed MMP patients.
  • To highlight the importance of a thorough diagnostic work-up for esophageal MMP.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 30 consecutive MMP patients diagnosed between 2006 and 2016.
  • Review of medical records, including reported symptoms, esophagogastroduodenoscopy findings, and immunofluorescence results.

Main Results:

  • 70% of patients reported symptoms suggestive of esophageal MMP.
  • Endoscopic findings compatible with MMP were observed in 30% of patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
  • No significant difference in indirect immunofluorescence results was found between patients with and without esophageal involvement.
