Trial and Error and Algorithm01:12

Trial and Error and Algorithm

429
A problem-solving strategy is a plan of action used to find a solution. Different strategies have distinct action plans. Trial and error involves trying different solutions until one works. For instance, to fix a broken printer, you might check ink levels, ensure the paper tray isn't jammed, and verify the printer's connection to your laptop. This method can be time-consuming but is commonly used. Thomas Edison, for example, used trial and error to find a suitable filament for the light...

Mechanistic Models: Compartment Models in Algorithms for Numerical Problem Solving

322
Mechanistic models play a crucial role in algorithms for numerical problem-solving, particularly in nonlinear mixed effects modeling (NMEM). These models aim to minimize specific objective functions by evaluating various parameter estimates, leading to the development of systematic algorithms. In some cases, linearization techniques approximate the model using linear equations.
In individual population analyses, different algorithms are employed, such as Cauchy's method, which uses a...

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment01:27

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

1.0K
In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.
Drugs such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, α2- and...

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

3.8K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Parkinson's Disease: Treatment

1.2K
Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's Disease (PD), involve the gradual and irreversible destruction of neurons in particular brain areas. These disorders exhibit standard features like proteinopathies, selective vulnerability of some neurons, and an interaction of intrinsic properties, genetics, and environmental influences in neural injury.
Parkinson's Disease is primarily a result of the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. The cornerstone of...

Alzheimer's Disease: Treatment

975
Alzheimer's Disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder, is pathologically identified by amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of tau protein. AD pharmacotherapy aims to manage cognitive symptoms, delay disease progression, and treat behavioral symptoms. The treatment is primarily symptomatic and palliative, with no definitive disease-modifying therapy available. Cholinesterase inhibitors, including donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), and galantamine (Razadyne), are...

Summary

Spine tumors occurring with spondylolisthesis are rare but can complicate diagnosis and treatment. This study proposes a new surgical treatment algorithm for patients with both conditions, aiding preoperative planning.

Area of Science:

  • Spine surgery
  • Oncology
  • Orthopedics

Background:

  • Pars defect and spondylolisthesis are common spinal conditions.
  • Spine bone tumors, especially primary ones, are rare.
  • The co-occurrence of these conditions can lead to delayed diagnosis and complex surgical management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the contemporary occurrence of spine bone tumors and spondylolisthesis.
  • To propose a novel, treatment-oriented surgical algorithm for patients with both conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients treated for spine bone tumors between 1990 and 2017.
  • Analysis of patient data including demographics, imaging, histology, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Identification of cases with coexisting spondylolisthesis or pars defect.

Main Results:

  • Out of 1870 spine tumor patients, 14 cases (1.2%) showed association with spondylolysis/spondylolisthesis.
  • The cohort comprised 14 patients (5 males, 9 females) aged 14-72, with a mean age of 47 at surgery.
  • This represents a rare but significant clinical presentation.

Conclusions:

  • The interaction between spondylolisthesis and spine bone tumors is infrequent.
  • A new classification and treatment algorithm (Type A and Type B) is proposed for surgical planning.
  • This algorithm aims to assist surgeons in managing this rare combination of spinal pathologies.
