Summary

This study found a modified Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) is a feasible tool for assessing intelligence in individuals with physical disabilities. Results suggest early-onset motor dysfunction may impact nonverbal intelligence more than verbal abilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and validity of a modified WAIS-R for individuals with speech and/or hand dysfunction.
  • To compare the performance of individuals with physical disabilities on the modified WAIS-R with a standard version.
  • To investigate the impact of early-onset versus later-onset motor dysfunction on cognitive abilities.

  • A modified WAIS-R, including four Verbal and three Performance subtests, was administered.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified WAIS-R is a promising instrument for assessing intelligence in individuals with physical limitations.
    • Early-onset motor dysfunction, as seen in severe cerebral palsy, may have a more substantial impact on nonverbal intelligence compared to verbal intelligence.
    • Later-onset motor dysfunction, as seen in spinal cord injury, appears to have less impact on overall intellectual assessment using the modified WAIS-R.
