Knee Joint01:23

Knee Joint

3.3K
The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.
A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris...

Modified Boxplots

11.3K
A standard box and whisker plot informs us about the spread of the data in a given sample. One can identify the minimum value, maximum value, first quartile value, second quartile or median value, and third quartile.
However, the box plot does not tell the reader about outliers - values that lie far from the center of the data. We can modify the standard box and whisker plot to identify the outliers and visualize the actual spread of the data in a sample.
Initially, we calculate the adjusted...

Antiasthma Drugs: Leukotriene Modifiers

1.9K
Leukotriene modifiers, or cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonists, are medications used to manage chronic asthma. These agents target specific inflammatory mediators produced during arachidonic acid metabolism, an essential process in generating inflammation in the body.
Leukotriene modifiers work through two distinct mechanisms:

Treating Helicobacter pylori in Peptic Ulcers: Antimicrobial Therapy

1.4K
Helicobacter pylori, a resilient gram-negative bacterium, can thrive in the stomach's harsh, acidic environment. Infection with H. pylori leads to a cascade of events within the stomach lining. One of the critical disruptions caused by this bacterium is the interference with somatostatin production, a hormone responsible for regulating acid secretion. This interference tips the balance, escalating acid secretion and diminishing bicarbonate levels. This imbalance compromises the defensive...

Imaging Studies I: Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder Studies

Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) StudiesKidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) studies are standard diagnostic imaging procedures used to assess the anatomy of the urinary system. They are commonly utilized for patients experiencing abdominal pain or urinary symptoms. By using a simple X-ray of the abdomen, KUB studies can reveal structural and pathological abnormalities within the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. These studies are particularly valuable in diagnosing kidney stones, urinary...

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Rehabilitation

Background:

  • Patellar malalignment (PM) often results from imbalanced soft tissue tension around the kneecap.
  • Current non-operative treatments for PM need further advancement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a specific knee extension training protocol for improving the vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) to vastus lateralis (VL) muscle activation ratio in healthy adults.
  • To assess the potential of this training as a conservative treatment for patellar malalignment.

Main Methods:

  • Surface electromyography (EMG) measured VMO and VL muscle activity in 30 healthy adults during knee extension from 90° flexion.
  • The VMO/VL ratio was calculated at 10° intervals to assess muscle balance.
  • Root mean square values of EMG signals were recorded for each action.

Main Results:

  • All tested knee extension actions demonstrated an effective VMO/VL ratio (>1), indicating balanced muscle activation.
  • The highest VMO/VL ratio (1.35) was observed at 60° of knee flexion.
  • No statistically significant differences were found between the different knee flexion angles (p=0.08).

Conclusions:

  • The described knee extension training appears to be a simple and effective method for conservative treatment of patellar malalignment.
  • Encouraging results suggest this technique could become a popular and effective option for managing PM.
