Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence and natural course of hearing loss following bacterial meningitis.
  • To identify patterns of hearing change in patients post-meningitis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study analyzing data from 655 patients diagnosed with bacterial meningitis between 1985 and 2015.
  • Evaluation of audiometric data to assess hearing loss incidence and changes over time.

Main Results:

  • The overall incidence of hearing loss (>25 dB) was 28%, with profound hearing loss (>80 dB) affecting 13% of patients.
  • Normal hearing post-meningitis remained stable; among those with hearing loss, 19 of 28 showed stable levels, 6 improved, and 2 deteriorated.
  • One patient experienced fluctuating unilateral hearing loss.

Conclusions:

  • Early audiological assessment is recommended for all bacterial meningitis patients, particularly children, after the acute phase.
  • Repeated audiometry is primarily indicated for individuals initially diagnosed with hearing loss, as normal hearing tends to remain stable.
