Factors Influencing Attraction VI: Personality Traits01:23

Factors Influencing Attraction VI: Personality Traits

251
Personality traits are fundamental in shaping social perception and influencing interpersonal relationships. Certain traits, such as agreeableness and extraversion, contribute positively to social interactions, whereas others, such as narcissism, have complex and often contradictory effects on how individuals are perceived over time. The Role of Agreeableness and ExtraversionAgreeableness and extraversion are associated with higher levels of interpersonal attractiveness and likability.

Polygenic Traits01:18

Polygenic Traits

69.2K
When more than one gene is responsible for a given phenotype, the trait is considered polygenic. Human height is a polygenic trait. Studies have uncovered hundreds of loci that influence height, and there are believed to be many more. Due to the high number of genes involved, as well as environmental and nutritional factors, height varies significantly within a given population. The distribution of height forms a bell-shaped curve, with relatively few individuals in the population at the...

Trait and State Self-Esteem

11.5K
The term self-esteem is often used generically, to refer to how people feel about themselves. However, according to research, there are three distinct constructs that should not be used interchangeably (Brown & Marshall, 2006).

Traits and States01:17

Traits and States

568
Personality traits represent consistent patterns in behavior, thoughts, and emotions, reflecting an individual's tendencies across various situations. For example, extraversion, a well-known trait, manifests in individuals as talkative, energetic, and enthusiastic behaviors. These traits are stable over time, offering a reliable framework for predicting how people might act in different contexts. However, they do not define every moment of an individual's life. In contrast to traits,...

X-linked Traits01:19

X-linked Traits

58.9K
In most mammalian species, females have two X sex chromosomes and males have an X and Y. As a result, mutations on the X chromosome in females may be masked by the presence of a normal allele on the second X. In contrast, a mutation on the X chromosome in males more often causes observable biological defects, as there is no normal X to compensate. Trait variations arising from mutations on the X chromosome are called “X-linked”.

Summary

Youths with Conduct Disorder (CD) show reduced amygdala activity when processing emotional faces. Psychopathic traits, however, impact amygdala-ventral anterior cingulate cortex connectivity, suggesting distinct neural mechanisms.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Antisocial behavior and psychopathic traits in youth are linked to impaired facial emotion recognition.
  • Neural mechanisms behind these deficits, particularly effective connectivity, remain understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of Conduct Disorder (CD) and psychopathic traits on amygdala activity and effective connectivity during facial emotion processing in male youths.
  • To examine group differences in amygdala responses and functional interactions between limbic regions.

Main Methods:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and psycho-physiological interaction (PPI) analyses were employed.
  • 46 male youths with CD and 25 typically-developing controls (aged 16-21) processed emotional faces.

Main Results:

  • Youths with CD exhibited reduced amygdala activity to angry/sad faces compared to neutral faces, with no significant group differences in amygdala effective connectivity.
  • Psychopathic traits showed a negative correlation with amygdala-ventral anterior cingulate cortex connectivity for angry vs. neutral faces.

Conclusions:

  • Conduct Disorder and psychopathic traits have differential effects on amygdala activation and functional connectivity in youths during facial emotion processing.
  • Findings highlight distinct neural underpinnings for antisocial behavior and psychopathic traits in adolescent facial emotion processing.
