Summary

Peroneal tendoscopy effectively visualizes the entire length of the peroneal tendons, including peroneus brevis and longus. Optimizing portal placement can further enhance visualization of specific tendon zones.

  • Peroneal tendoscopy is a common surgical procedure.
  • No previous studies have quantified the visualization effectiveness of tendoscopy for peroneal tendon lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure the length of the peroneal tendons visualized during tendoscopy.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of tendoscopy for peroneal tendon injuries.

Main Methods:

  • Ten fresh cadaveric specimens were used.
  • Standard peroneal tendoscopy techniques were applied.
  • Tendon sheaths were dissected to measure visualized lengths from anatomic landmarks.

Main Results:

  • Peroneus brevis was visualized entirely in zone 1 and 19.5 mm into zone 2.
  • Peroneus longus was visualized entirely in zones 1 and 2, and 9.7 mm into zone 3.
  • A more distal portal improved visualization of zone 3 peroneus longus.

Conclusions:

  • Routine peroneal tendoscopy allows visualization of the majority of the peroneal tendon length.
  • Appropriate portal placement is crucial for comprehensive visualization.
  • Further research may explore optimizing portal placement for specific tendon zones.
