Routes of Persuasion02:20

Routes of Persuasion

68.8K
Persuasion is the process of changing our attitude toward something based on some kind of communication. Much of the persuasion we experience comes from outside forces. How do people convince others to change their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors? What communications do you receive that attempt to persuade you to change your attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors?

Initiation of Translation02:33

Initiation of Translation

39.2K
Initiating translation is complex because it involves multiple molecules. Initiator tRNA, ribosomal subunits, and eukaryotic initiation factors (eIFs) are all required to assemble on the initiation codon of mRNA. This process consists of several steps that are mediated by different eIFs.
First, the initiator tRNA must be selected from the pool of elongator tRNAs by eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2). The initiator tRNA (Met-tRNAi) has conserved sequence elements including modified bases at...

Chromosome Replication02:31

Chromosome Replication

10.8K
Before a cell can divide, it must accurately replicate all of its chromosomes, including the DNA and its associated histone and non-histone proteins.  This process begins at numerous origins of replication during the S phase of the cell cycle in each of a cell’s chromosomes simultaneously. Certain nucleotides can act as origins of replication, but these sequences are not well defined - especially in complex, multi-cellular, eukaryotic species. The length of DNA that spans an origin...

Leaky Scanning02:28

Leaky Scanning

5.7K
During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA.  Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R...

Summary

Prediabetes is common in Colombia, yet awareness is low. Early detection via the FINDRIS questionnaire and lifestyle changes, or metformin if needed, can prevent progression to type 2 diabetes (DM2) and cardiovascular issues.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Public Health
  • Preventive Medicine

Background:

  • High prevalence of prediabetes in Colombia, with limited awareness among healthcare professionals and the public.
  • Prediabetes is recognized in medical guidelines and ICD but lacks widespread understanding.
  • Prediabetes poses significant risks, including progression to type 2 diabetes (DM2) and independent cardiovascular outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the importance of recognizing and evaluating prediabetes in Colombia.
  • To recommend strategies for improving prediabetes awareness and management.
  • To advocate for the systematic implementation of risk assessment tools.

Main Methods:

  • Expert group recommendations based on existing knowledge and studies in Colombia.
  • Emphasis on a global approach to risk factors including family history, overweight/obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension.
  • Validation and recommendation of the FINDRIS questionnaire for systematic screening.

Main Results:

  • Prediabetes progresses to DM2 annually at a 10% rate.
  • Prediabetes is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events.
  • The FINDRIS questionnaire is effective in identifying individuals at risk for prediabetes and DM2.

Conclusions:

  • Educational programs should promote a comprehensive understanding of prediabetes risk.
  • Systematic application of the FINDRIS questionnaire nationwide is recommended as government policy.
  • Immediate management post-diagnosis, including lifestyle changes and potential metformin therapy, is crucial for preventing DM2 and cardiovascular complications.
