Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze changes in sedentary behavior patterns following a physical activity intervention in older adults.
  • To investigate the influence of sex on these changes in sedentary behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Pooled reanalysis of 120 inactive older adults from two 12-week step/day-target interventions.
  • Random assignment to intervention (STEP) or control (CON) groups.
  • Assessment of SB and PA using hip-worn accelerometers (Actigraph).

Main Results:

  • Significant decreases in SB (-25 minutes) were observed, primarily driven by increased moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA; +17.3 minutes).
  • A 1% increase in MVPA proportion correlated with a 1.21% decrease in SB.
  • Pattern analysis revealed reductions in daily sedentary bouts (10, 20, 30 min) and sit-to-stand transitions in the intervention group.
  • Males reduced longer sedentary bouts, while females decreased sit-to-stand transitions.

Conclusions:

  • Reductions in SB were achieved by decreasing shorter sedentary bouts and through diverse individual and sex-specific adaptations.
  • Interventions can effectively reduce SB in older adults, with sex influencing the specific behavioral changes adopted.
