This study surveyed Emergency Medical Services (EMS) fellows, finding most had prior emergency medicine training and used specific textbooks. Fellows felt most prepared for clinical aspects of board exams, but least for quality management and research.

Background:

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited EMS fellowships starting in 2013.
The first EMS In-Training Examination (EMSITE) was administered in 2016.
EMS fellowship education is becoming the primary pathway for board certification.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the current cohort of EMS fellows in ACGME-accredited programs.
To outline the educational opportunities available to these fellows.
To inform future needs in EMS fellowship education.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional survey was administered to EMS fellows.
The survey was conducted alongside the first EMSITE between April and June 2016.
A 14-question survey with multiple-choice and free-response items was used, with basic frequency statistics applied to the data.

Main Results:

Fifty fellows from 35 ACGME-accredited programs completed the survey (100% response rate).
96% of fellows had prior emergency medicine training; 50% performed helicopter patient care.
Fellows reported using NAEMSP textbooks and felt most prepared for clinical aspects, least for quality management and research.

Conclusions:

The study provides insights into the characteristics and educational experiences of current EMS fellows.
Findings highlight areas of strength and potential areas for improvement in fellowship curricula.
Data can guide the evolution of EMS fellowship education to meet future demands.
